14614              PYAEMIC KIDNEY

The patient was a 41 year old welder who sustained extensive 3rd degree burns and died 11 days later from renal failure and pyaemia.  At necropsy multiple small abscesses (up to 3 mm in diameter) were found scattered throughout the myocardium and in other organs.

The specimen consists of a bisected kidney.  The capsule has been removed from one portion showing a smooth cortical surface which is studded with multiple abscesses, each surrounded by a dark congested zone.  The cut surface shows multiple abscesses throughout the substance of the kidney both in the medulla and the cortex.  Some of the latter are of a linear type.
